Clearing the Path - Step 1

“Man is the mirror of the universe, and his triple nature stands in relationship to all things."

~~~ Van Helmont, the Great Flemish Scientist and Chemist.
Psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, viewed the individual as being in a constant battle with their conscious and unconscious minds. An individual carrying out daily conscious functions I suppose, can be seen as a microcosmic speck, being directed by the macrocosm of their subconscious and super conscious minds. Each one of us, are the result of programs. These programs have been placed into us from the onset of conception, via our genetic codings and variations as well as the experiences that comprise of our lives especially during the stages of in utero to early childhood development. These aspects of development are largely molded by the individuals that grow us up, and the environments we are exposed to. Thus a battle between the things we desire - our conscious self- and programs that drive us - our subconscious & unconscious selves - ensues as we begin to seek our individuality in later years.
A struggle to find individuality is something every being experiences, even one who is brought up in a home where the best opportunities or values are thought to have been fostered. Thus my concept of Self Care Ritual, places Clearing the Path as its 1st Stage. To truly step into one's individuality and in turn embody one's totality, an undoing of self is required. This undoing requires the individual to become a witness to all that they are and are not. Self observation is essential to growth. It is the how we begin to understand our reactions and unconscious programs that are often times unhealthy for the lives we seek to lead.
In my years of self inquiry, I noticed that Clearing the Path required deep inner child work. Despite being the carriage, I was in no way steering the horse in the way I desired to. My emotions controlled me, and later on in my teens as I biologically became a woman, my womb's cycling controlled me, gradually handicapping my life each month. My education began to suffer, as well as my energy and overall health. When medical doctors failed, and my inner workings called out to a deeper knowing, I retreated to the care of holistic health care providers with alternative treatment methods. It was there that I truly began to understand that we are more than what we appear to be. That at some point in our life, every human if not through a conscious decision, will one day be aligned to come face to face with Self, via what is often called a dark night of the soul. Where everything we think or know ourselves to be, is questioned. It is an essential chaotic beauty of life's unfolding. The blessing to tend to our unconscious self that drives up to 90-95% of who we are.
There are many simple but effective ways to go about Self Enquiry:
~ ~ ~ CHARTING ~ ~ ~
Get a page. And make a timeline of every memory that has shaped your life. Good memories. Painful memories. Where possible, adding the age or year at which the event occurred. Be easy on yourself, while being comforted in the truth that facing your life, without judgement is the greatest gift you can give to yourself.
~ ~ ~ KNOW YOUR BIRTH STORY ~ ~ ~
Where possible, speak to your parent(s) and any other family member or friend of the family, who would have been present during the time you were in utero.
The native indians of North America, carry out a custom where the child is sang the story if their birth while growing up. They believe that knowing your birth story is an important aspect of your identity and that each child should know their birth story.
Listening to the story of our creation and birth, is a powerful asset for inner child healing, and fosters empathy, while also becoming a container for greater understanding and healing to occur.
~ ~ ~ WITNESS YOUR NAKED BODY ~ ~ ~
Our society is built on fixated images of how we should look, where we should be at a certain age, what equates to a "proper individual". This in turn, creates a false foundation for self development. The individual therefore never learns to be naked with self
Stand in front of a mirror naked, and simply witness your body. Starting with the eyes, look into your left eye, then the right, before you blink, gently close your eyes for a few moments. Then gently gaze at the reflection of your naked body in the mirror, with slow soft breaths. Pausing in areas where your sight and mind projects negative views. Allow the feelings, then hug yourself or simply place a palm on the area you feel negative about.
Our tissues store memory. Simply witnessing the part of our body we reject, while placing gentle touch, and taking a few moments to simply breathe saying I'M SORRY. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. I LOVE YOU. THANK YOU. Can become a powerful healing moment, in a society where self esteem is not fostered, and body shaming us rampant.
For those unsure if their sexuality or hold sexual trauma, or just anyone wishing to know every part of self --- find quiet time to look at your genetials with the use of a hand mirror. Always with gentle breath, witnessing the feelings and thoughts that arise, allowing them without judgement.
 ~ ~ ~ SIT WITH A PROFESSIONAL ~ ~ ~
There is nothing in this world that can replace the guidance of a qualified professional. Preferably one who is trained in alternative counselling methods. No friend, family member, religious or spiritual leader, equates to the tools that a qualified professional can offer in the realms of self healing and expansion. There are many tools, available to aid an individual access their inner recesses, as a way to become a more whole being. Something that the Caribbean society needs to take into greater consideration. Sitting with a therapist isn't "for mad people alone" nor is it "white people thing". Sitting before a therapist who holds empathy, compassion, and is trained beyond telling you what big pharma pills to pop, can become your greatest ally in your oath to self undoing, that allows you to be remade into an image of self that you desire to become.
~ ~ ~ SPIRITUAL CLEANSING ~ ~ ~
We are not just our gross bodies, but also an energetic body, that absorbs emotions and vibrations from the environments we come into contact with. This to a large extent affects our mood, as well as our energy levels.
Most Trinbagonians have heard about having a salt and lime bath, or swimming in the sea when we cross waters. These are techniques used to cleanse our auric fields. Other simple exercises are, walking barefooted on grass or the earth, standing in the first rains, hugging a tree, early morning sun bathing, full moon bathing, as well as deep breathing to pump the body free from old energy.
~ ~ ~ DETOXIFICATION ~ ~ ~
Detoxifying one's self and life is a very essential endeavour that should be done as needed. Our lives and bodies become lighter when purged and purified from all that no longer serves us.
Parasitic cleanses can be done every 6-12 months for both women and men. This helps free the individual of heavy or fleeting emotions caused by parasites inhabiting our bodies and directing our sweet cravings as well as sometimes erratic emotions.
Colon cleanses help our system to function effectively, as the debris in our body becomes less. We then don't just literally have less S%#! in our bodies, but also room for less emotional baggage caused from sluggishness when the bowels and colon are not in order.
Sweating via the use of a sauna, sitting over epsom salts in a bucket of water, while wearing socks and covered with blankets, or running or jogging to ensure you sweat, is something that should be practiced a few times a month. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and having clean pores can be the secret weapon towards feeling lighter in body, mind, emotion.
Dr. Raj often uses the cliché, "Know thyself".
To truly know one's self, is to engage in the processes of undoing all the unhealthy things we were taught & in the process, began to believe about ourselves and lives, while making the conscious commitment to refashion ourselves into an image that is more sustainable for our individual existential well-being.
